China’s Development Model Will Spur Reform, Vice President Says

(Bloomberg) — China’s new development model will help further the nation’s reform and opening up, with a bigger focus on domestic demand, Vice President Wang Qishan said.

The government is working to remove structural impediments to encourage the market to determine the allocation of resources in the economy, Wang said in a pre-recorded speech at the Second Bund Summit in Shanghai on Saturday. China has entered the stage of high-quality development and the economy enjoys “broad prospects,” he said.

Wang said China will foster a more convenient and world-class business environment governed by a sound legal framework. In the development of the financial sector, the country will “keep away from the wrongful paths of excessive speculation, self-reinforcing cycles of financial bubbles and Ponzi schemes,” he said.

South Carolina vs. LSU odds, line: 2020 college football picks, Week 8 predictions from proven model

The South Carolina Gamecocks and the LSU Tigers will face off in a SEC clash at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday at Tiger Stadium. South Carolina is 2-2 thus far this season, while LSU is 1-2 overall and 0-1 at home. The Tigers have struggled mightily on defense this season, giving up an average of 32 points per game. South Carolina, meanwhile, enters Saturday’s SEC showdown averaging 30.5 points per game on offense.

The Tigers are favored by six-points in the latest LSU vs. South Carolina odds from William Hill, and the over-under is set at 55.5. Before entering any South Carolina vs. LSU picks, you’ll want to see the college football predictions from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

The SportsLine Projection Model simulates every FBS college football game 10,000 times. Over the past four-plus years, the proprietary computer model has generated a stunning profit of over $4,100 for $100 players on its top-rated college football picks against the spread. It is a sizzling 25-13 on top-rated picks through seven weeks of the 2020 college football season, returning over $700 in profit already. Anyone who has followed it has seen huge returns.

Now, the model has set its sights on LSU vs. South Carolina. You can head to SportsLine to see its picks. Here are several college football odds for South Carolina vs. LSU:

  • LSU vs. South Carolina spread: LSU -6
  • LSU vs. South Carolina over-under: 55.5 points
  • LSU vs. South Carolina money line: LSU -220, South Carolina +190

What you need to know about South Carolina

South Carolina beat the Auburn Tigers 30-22 last Saturday. RB Kevin Harris was the offensive standout of the contest for the Gamecocks, punching in two rushing touchdowns. Harris has been sensational for the Gamecocks this season, having already recorded six rushing touchdowns and 409 yards on 81 rushing attempts. Quarterback Collin Hill has also been a serious threat for Will Muschamp’s team, throwing for 842 yards and four touchdowns, while also adding four rushing scores.

South Carolina has now won two straight SEC games, and the Gamecocks are 4-1-1 against the spread in their last six games against conference foes. However, South Carolina has struggled on the road, winning just two of its last eight games away from home.

What you need to know about LSU

Meanwhile, LSU was within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap as the Tigers fell 45-41 to Missouri in their last outing. Despite the defeat, LSU got a solid performance out of WR Terrace Marshall Jr., who caught 11 passes for three touchdowns and 235 yards. One of the most thrilling moments was Marshall Jr.’s 75-yard TD reception in the third quarter.

Despite its slow start to the season, LSU will enter Saturday’s contest confident it can secure the victory. That’s because LSU has been dominant at Tiger Stadium, winning eight of its last nine home games. In addition, the Tigers are 6-0 in their last six games against the Gamecocks.

There are Major Flaws in 538’s Do-It-Yourself Election Model

Video Instruction

The video uses Florida in a very flawed manner.

You can Explore The Ways Trump Or Biden Could Win The Election

Do It Yourself

Let’s change one state, Florida.

Change in Florida

Results

  • A change in Florida dramatically changes the forecast elsewhere, flipping Arizona and North Carolina as well.
  • Arizona went from 67-33 Biden to 74-24 Trump.
  • North Carolina went from 67-33 Biden to 69-31 Trump.

The inherent problem is 538 made no distinction between Trump winning by 0.5% or Trump winning by 2.5%.

To the interactive model, a win is a win.

Moreover, the model appears to assume that we know the result in Florida, but have nothing but 538’s projections for the other states.

Arizona may very well be decided on election night. We will know something about North Carolina as well.

Changing Florida and Arizona

Two States Decided Florida and Arizona

In the above example, I set Florida and Arizona, one for Trump and one for Biden. That’s not an unlikely possibility, in any direction.

Now the results are back to 83-16 in favor of Biden.

Early Vote Counting

Early Vote Counting

Third Problem

The video example makes it appear as if this all comes down to Florida again. It doesn’t.

So no, we cannot say that if Trump wins Florida, he has a 40% chance of winning.

  1. The margin of Trump’s alleged Florida win certainly matters. 538’s interactive model says a win is a win.
  2. We will not magically see Florida in a vacuum.
  3. The video example over-emphasizes Florida. It is not that simple.

In practice, we will have partial results elsewhere and perhaps even full results in Arizona.

The interactive model seriously needs work. I suggest it be reworked to put in custom percentages instead of projecting winners.

Tesla Recalls China Model S/X, Plans to Export Model 3

Bloomberg and other outlets today reported that Tesla has issued a recall on roughly 30,000 Model S and Model X vehicles imported to China that were manufactured between 2013 and 2017. TSLA stock declined in early trading on the news, recovering throughout the day as the overall markets rose into market close.

Per Bloomberg, “The company is recalling vehicles made between Sept. 17, 2013, and Jan. 15, 2018, according to a statement by the State Administration for Market Regulation on Friday. There are two different suspension defects, and some of the recalled vehicles potentially have both of them, the authority said.”

Initial details were relatively sparse, but Electrek was able to find a little more information in a letter from Tesla to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explaining the recall. The letter is reportedly from Elizabeth Mykytiuk, Tesla’s managing counsel for regulatory affairs.

“Due to the opinion of SAMR/DPAC that the topic required a recall in the China market, Tesla was left with the choice of either voluntarily recalling the subject vehicles or carrying a heavy burden through the Chinese administrative process. While Tesla disagrees with the opinion of SAMR/DPAC, the Company has decided not to dispute a recall for the China market only.”

Per Electrek, the suspension issues occur in less than 0.05% of Model S/X vehicles outside of China, and 0.10% in China. Tesla believes “the root cause of the issue is driver abuse, including that driver usage and expectation for damageability is uniquely severe in the China market,” hence the higher rate of issues in the country and the isolated recall.

In other news out of China, Tesla is expected to begin exporting China-made Model 3s from Giga Shanghai this quarter. The move has led to questions on demand in China. For more analysis on the situation, please see the included video and be sure to follow Tesla Daily on The Street for the latest news and analysis.

Jersey City awarded $295K grant for model COVID-19 response

Jersey City has received a grant of nearly $300,000 to continue its work in addressing the racial health inequities during the coronavirus pandemic, city officials said.

The city is one of just 25 communities across the country awarded by the Kresge Foundation for its response to the leading in the midst of challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and working to solve issues of racial injustice. The Kresge Foundation invests more than $160 million annually to foster economic and social change.

City officials say the city will be the first in the world to serve as a pilot for multi-platform global applications through the one-of-a-kind partnership where the curriculum being developed is based on Jersey City’s work towards creating a healthy city. It is expected that the Jersey City’s approach will serve as an international model for cities worldwide.

City officials said the $295,263 grant will be used to increase staff training and further deliver equitable, racially, and ethnically appropriate services to diverse communities throughout the entire city.

“As the most diverse city in the nation, our residents have diverse needs, and we’re committed to expanding critical resources many residents rely on.,” Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop said. “We will continue to identify and address health disparities and to ensure we meet the emerging needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The training component will help develop and certify professional staff to address behavioral health issues and integrating best practices on violence prevention into department programs and services.

Jersey City saw a 300% increase in demand for Meals on Wheels during the height of the pandemic and enlisted local transportation services and the like to help deliver the meals.

“We have drastically improved public access to the myriad of health services we offer from meal deliveries to mental health services, to public showers, to distributing hand sanitizers and masks, and everything in between,” said Stacey Flanagan, director of the city’s Health and Human Services Department. “We are meeting the historic demand for our city services, and this grant is a much-needed financial boost to be able to expand upon our success to ensure no one is left behind.”

Also during the height of the pandemic, the city’s public showers were reopened with expanded hours to help the homeless maintain sanitation and hygiene, a key factor in curbing the spread of the virus. The location has also provided city an opportunity to provide useful support and supplies, including free flu shots and rapid response COVID-19 testing.

These efforts are part of an initiative in which Jersey City was chosen as one of five cities worldwide to engage in a partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF), changing how government approaches public policy as it relates to the global fabric of a healthier world.

Tesla to Recall Nearly 50,000 Model S and X Vehicles in China Over Safety Concerns

When it reported strong third-quarter earnings on Wednesday, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) delighted investors. The week, however, is ending on a less auspicious note for the automaker with its announcement that it’s recalling almost 50,000 vehicles that it exported to China. At issue are potential defects in the suspensions of 29,193 Model S and Model X vehicles manufactured in the U.S. between Sept. 17, 2013, and Aug. 16, 2017, as well as 19,249 Model S vehicles produced between Sept. 17, 2013, and Oct. 15, 2018.

According to Gasgoo, a Chinese website that reports on that nation’s auto industry, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) is requesting that the carmaker replace the rear linkages of the left and right front suspension and the upper linkages of the left and right rear suspension for all affected vehicles at no cost to the vehicles’ owners.

Recall spelled out with wooden blocks.

While China is insistent that Tesla attend to the alleged safety issue, the company has voiced its opposition to the recall. In a letter sent to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that Electrek, a website that focuses on the electric transportation industry, obtained, Elizabeth H. Mykytiuk, Tesla’s managing counsel for regulatory affairs, implied that China had left the company with little choice in the matter. Mykytiuk stated:

“Due to the opinion of SAMR/DPAC that the topic required a recall in the China market, Tesla was left with the choice of either voluntarily recalling the subject vehicles or carrying a heavy burden through the Chinese administrative process. While Tesla disagrees with the opinion of SAMR/DPAC, the Company has decided not to dispute a recall for the China market only.”

Furthermore, Mykytiuk contends that the alleged issue is not reflective of any defect in the vehicles’ parts or manufacture, but rather that it stems from “driver abuse” in how people operate the vehicles.

Tesla Recalls 30,000 U.S.-Made Model S, X EVs in China for Suspension Issues

From Car and Driver

  • In China, Tesla is recalling 29,193 Model S and Model X vehicles that were made in the United States, citing suspension issues that could lead to an accident.

  • The vehicles were built between September 17, 2013, and January 15, 2018, at Tesla’s Fremont, California, factory.

  • This appears to be an ongoing issue for Tesla. Consumer Reports has published
reports by Model S owners about suspension issues in their vehicles.

Tesla is recalling a total of 29,193 U.S.-made Model S and Model X vehicles that were exported to China, according to a statement from the China State Administration for Market Regulation. The vehicles, built between September 17, 2013, and January 15, 2018, have potentially faulty front and rear suspensions. After large impacts, the connecting rods may become damaged, leading to an accident if the suspension fails. The vehicles were all produced at Tesla’s plant in Fremont, California.

To remedy the issue, Tesla reportedly will replace the rear connecting links in the front suspension and the upper connecting links in the rear suspension for the affected vehicles; there are two different defects, and not all of the vehicles have them both, the statement from SMAR says. The recall doesn’t cover the China-made Model 3, which recently began production at Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai.

This is the fourth recall for Tesla vehicles imported into China, according to CNBC. The earlier recalls addressed Takata airbags as well as steering issues. A representative of Tesla in China did not immediately respond to Car and Driver’s request for comment. Nor did a representative from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Tesla, in a letter to NHTSA sent in early September, said that it disagreed with the decision made by SAMR and that it wasn’t recalling the parts outside of China because it doesn’t believe there is anything to recall. Tesla said in the letter that the issue is simply a result of driver failure, such as a “severe pothole strike.”

It is unclear whether Model S and Model X vehicles built in Fremont at the same time that remained in the United States could be recalled as well. This appears to be an ongoing issue for the automaker. Consumer Reports said that owners have reported problems with the suspension in their Model S sedans, particularly in the 2017 model, and the publication has said suspension issues were the main reason it stopped recommending the Model S.
