Jennifer Nettles is getting some hard-earned recognition for her fight for women in the country music industry. Last night at the 2020 CMT Music Awards, the Sugarland singer was presented with the first-ever Equal Play award, which recognizes Nettles’ ongoing advocacy to get women’s albums heard on country music radio stations the same amount as their male counterparts. Nettles has pioneered the path for Equal Play, and last night, she received a well-deserved round of applause from her peers.

After a moving tribute video in which fellow country stars Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, and Sheryl Crow expressed their gratitude for Nettles’ dedication to Equal Play, 2020 CMT Music Awards host Sarah Hyland presented Nettles with the award. The star thanked Hyland, made a joke about applying eyeshadow for the first time in a long time just for the virtual show (#relatable), and continued with a heartfelt speech.

“Thank you to all the fans, and especially my artists, my sisters out there who continue to burn the holy fire,” Nettles said.

“I am so proud to be a part of this legacy of women in country music with you, and I am so proud of the stories that we tell,” she continued. “We have more to do as soon as we can, and I can’t wait to do it alongside you, holding your hands. Thank you so very much.”

Last year, at the 2019 CMA Awards, Nettles made a bold statement when she wore a power suit and cape on the red carpet that read, “Play our f*@#!N records, please and thank you.”

The singer’s pink and white ensemble was the talk of the night—and sent a clear message to country music radio: They need to step up their game. In response, in January 2020 CMT committed to a 50/50 split in airtime for women and men country artists.

Since then, Nettles has continued to lead the fight for Equal Play and work toward women representation in the music industry. We’re so happy Nettles was given the recognition she deserves for fighting this important fight.

It should go without saying that here at Town & Country, fine jewelry is one of our real obsessions. Whether it’s taking a deep dive on the very best of the royals’ tiaras (and who wore them), or covering the record-setting auction of a 100 carat diamond, we love to talk about—and try on—great jewels. We know our readers feel just as passionately as our editors, so we conceived of the Town & Country Reader’s Choice Jewelry and Watch Awards, where our devoted readership can share what they are obsessing over this year. Below, brilliant jewelers and watchmakers across the industry are up for the coveted title of “Readers’ Choice” as part of our annual jewelry awards. Jewelry and watch enthusiasts will have one month to read and vote on their favorite pieces. Stay tuned for the winning designs!

Best Gemstone Setting

It is one thing to use fine and precious stones, but it is another to truly exalt them in a piece. Case in point: Asprey’s use of amethyst in their Chaos collection. Both the Chaos Purple Necklace and Chaos Purple Ring utilize the stone (which is known for its calming qualities) in multiple shapes, creating an abstract layout. Although the pieces were meticulously assembled, the results are delightfully eccentric and eye-catching.

Most Stylish Rose Gold Watch

Rose gold has been popular for several years thanks to its flattering pink undertones. This makes it an obvious choice for a watch, which must complement different outfits and jewelry each day. Blancpain offers two elevated everyday options with the Heure Decentree and the Villeret Quantième Complet. While both boast intricate diamond detailing, the former, with its white leather band, ornate diamond pattern throughout, and mother of pearl face is pure elegance, while the latter is more understated.

Most Innovative Craftsmanship

Boucheron has made a name for itself in its 160-year history for bold stone settings with big personalities. This year’s high jewelry offerings, the Miroirs Infinis Ring and the Perles de Plume Necklace, both part of the Contemplation collection, live up to the French jeweler’s reputation. The Miroirs Infinis takes a 5.08 carat pear-cut diamond and elevates it in a cocktail ring with white jade and paved diamonds, making it a true showstopper. The feather-like Perles de Plume Necklace, on the other hand, sets a rose cut 1.6 carat diamond with cultured pearls and paved diamonds for a femininely daring effect.

Best Modern Dial

Breguet upgrades the classic watch face to make an eye catching statement with both the Marine Dame 9518 and the Reine de Naples 8918. The Marine Dame 9518 timepiece has the hallmarks of an iconic watch with its guilloche mother of pearl dial paired with rose gold metal and diamond accents.

Organizers had anticipated 116,000 in-person and virtual participants. They said tens of thousands showed up at what turned out to be 438 #CountonUs marches across all 50 states.

Actions were planned in key swing states including “a march for Black lives lost in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,” a “Feminist Icon Costume Party in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,” and a “golf cart parade at The Villages, Florida,” according to organizers.

Women’s march protests have taken place every year since the first drew more than a million to various locations the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump.

This year’s goal was to ensure that the 1.25 million women on the organization’s list vote and bring three friends.

“Women showed up in force on day 1 of Trump’s presidency for the first Women’s March, and now we’re mobilizing to finish what we started,” Rachel O’Leary Carmona, the executive director of Women’s March said in a statement. “Trump’s presidency began with women taking to the streets, and that’s how it’s going to end.”

Meet the Black women defying the stereotypes of country music

Rissi Palmer was fed up with reading music articles that mentioned the same five country artists of color over and over again, seemingly erasing the expansive history of Black and brown artists’ contributions to country music.

That’s why Palmer, a successful country artist who has performed at the White House, Lincoln Center and the Grand Ole Opry, started her Apple Music radio show, “Color Me Country.” The show aims to recognize and validate the presence and history of Black and brown women in country music, including Mickey Guyton, Tiera, Miko Marks and many others.

“There are so many people out there that look like me — or are Latina or Latinx or Indigenous or whatever — that want to be in the industry,” said Palmer, who is Black. “And sometimes it just helps to just see somebody that looks like you.”

Palmer’s radio show is named after Linda Martell’s 1970 album “Color Me Country.” Martell was a trailblazer in country music when, in 1969, she became the first Black woman to perform solo at the Grand Ole Opry. But Martell’s contributions to the genre, as well as those of other Black and brown country artists, have largely gone under the radar.

Women of color have long faced a culture of exclusion in country music, a genre that has typically favored white men, even though its roots are linked with early Black American music. Since country music’s founding in the 1920s, only four Black female solo artists and one all-Black female group have charted on a country music chart. On the Billboard list of 50 Top Country Artists in 2019, only four are female solo artists and one is a female group, and none are Black.

Country music never had a reason to change, but now with an increasingly diverse audience and more recent cultural reckonings over gender and race, change may be inevitable. The genre’s gatekeepers remain reluctant to accept the growing numbers of diverse country artists and listeners. Even so, some performers of color are forging their own paths anyway.

Erased history

Country music wouldn’t be what it is today without the contributions of African Americans, Palmer said. Hank Williams Sr. learned to play guitar from Rufus “Tee Tot” Payne, a Black musician, and The Carter Family learned their guitar riffs from Lesley Riddle, also a Black man. A lot of country music’s early style came from the gospel music sung at Black churches in the South.

“Black people and brown people have always had an interest in country music — they’ve always played it and always enjoyed it,” said Amanda Marie Martinez, a doctoral candidate at UCLA, who has written extensively about race in country music.

The roots of Black artists in country music are even in the instruments themselves, Martinez said: The banjo is an African instrument, and the fiddle was played predominantly by slaves. The music played by African slaves was borrowed and implemented into the music of white Southerners.

Why Germany is doing better than any other country in 2020

  • John Kampfner is an author and journalist who’s had a 25-year career working for international publications including The Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, and BBC.
  • His latest book, “Why the Germans Do It Better; Notes from a Grown-Up Country,” dives into how Germany is a model country for driving prosperity and overcoming a turbulent history.
  • In this op-ed, Kampfner highlights how Germany’s aim to create steady, uninterrupted growth has helped the country outperform countries like the UK and US, who he says follow the “get rich quick” route.
  • Amid political unrest in the US, whatever the results of the 2020 election, Kampfner says Germany has an opportunity to step up and act as a political example to the rest of the world.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Thirty years on from reunification, the world still doesn’t quite seem to know what it wants of Germany. When its economy struggles, as it did in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, it is derided as the “sick man of Europe,” over-regulated and old-fashioned. When German companies corner global markets, they are denounced as aggressive. We don’t want Germany to throw its weight around the world, yet we do want it to pull its weight.

Perhaps, just perhaps, I am beginning to wonder whether the tide might be turning. The trigger, if not cause, for a reassessment of Germany has been the COVID-19 pandemic. In many countries, not least my own, the UK, almost every media interview with a government minister contains the question: “But why can’t we do it more like the Germans?”

The measure of a country — or an institution or individual for that matter — is not the difficulties it faces, but how it surmounts them.

On that test, modern-day Germany is a country to be envied. It has developed a maturity that few others can match.

Post-war Germany has long been known for its political stability and economic prowess. Less lauded perhaps has been its emphasis on social cohesion. This has enabled the country to find its way through a series of challenges — unification, the financial crash, the refugee crisis of 2015, and now the pandemic.

Germany did not go down the “get rich quick” route of the US or other countries like the UK.

It managed to create wealth, while having a strong social safety net. It realized long before others that countries cannot be successful if regional imbalances are not tackled. Germany has had its longest uninterrupted run of growth for half a century, with the highest levels of employment since reunification and surging tax receipts. It has run surpluses since 2014 and paid down large amounts of debt, while still increasing spending and (prior to COVID) ensuring near full employment. For all its anxieties, the country continues to outperform its rivals.

When I started writing my book “Why the Germans Do It Better” in 2018, I saw its title as deliberately provocative. Some, even now, bridle at its inference. To my shock, the book seems

Rustic Country Decor – How to Decorate Cottage Style Homes

Rustic country decor and how to decorate cottage style homes are extensions of American country style decorating. In addition, traditions are borrowed from French, English and some Swedish country looks. Rustic country decor can be defined as coarse, charmingly simple, unfussy, unfinished and yet with endearing qualities. Rustic country decorating includes the use of natural woods, aged surfaces, rough finishes and simple lines. Cottage style homes are comfortable, modest, quaint homes that can be made of thick stone or log wood.

Floors in rustic country decor and cottage style homes are made with stone or wood materials. Wooden floors were traditionally constructed with boards that were bare and simply waxed and hand-polished (high-gloss varnishes did not exist). Sometimes the boards were painted with light colors. If you like floor coverings, use oriental rugs and throws for visual warmth and color. Rustic country decor is about handcrafted objects, simplicity, furnishings that you enjoy and connecting back to nature.

Rustic cottage furniture is commonly made with pine and perhaps painted with hand-painted designs such as flowers, birds, animals, country scenery or leaves. Use ladderback chairs, rocking chairs, benches, wicker furniture and Windsor chairs. A large rectangular table made of pine is a good option for your kitchen or dining room table. To give your furniture a rustic look, brush a coat of paint on the furniture piece, then rub most of the paint off. After it dries, apply wood stain unevenly for an older weathered appearance. It will be perfect and rustic looking!

Baskets can be used to store wood, pine cones, flowers, plants and needlework. Brass candle holders, oil or kerosene lamps, sconces, hurricane lamps, tin lanterns, recessed ceiling fixtures or a vintage wrought-iron or metal chandelier provide successful lighting for rustic country decor and cottage style homes. Colors used in rustic country decor or cottage style homes are neutral tones ranging from white to bone, earth tones, red barn, blues and greens.

For rustic country decor in the kitchen, use open shelves, hutches, buffets, plate racks and cupboards for storage. Often, country kitchen storage is crammed with stoneware pots, plain glazed earthenware and glass jars. Kitchen pots should be made of copper, steel or cast iron – cookware tends to be large and plain. Use open shelving in the rustic country kitchen to display plates, dishes and dinnerware collections. Natural woods, light colors and bright fabrics work great for window treatments. Adding a rustic butcher block island creates a wonderful visual effect as well as provides useful functionality.

A rustic country decor bathroom has neutral tones or soft colored walls, antique-looking lighting, and wooden antiques or antique reproduction cabinets and vanity. Knowing how to decorate cottage style homes and bathrooms can result in creating a calm and elegant atmosphere. Clawfoot tubs, pedestal sinks, country style antique brass faucets and old-fashioned country cabinets provide the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to spend time there. Plain white towels are recommended instead of patterned or bright modern patterns. Use wicker or …
